Meet Becky - Your New Coach

My Story

Being healthy is a journey. I know this because I haven't always been healthy. In my late teens, twenty's and thirty's I struggled with self-image issues and had a love/hate relationship with food. My goal was to be "skinny". To achieve this unrealistic goal that I set for myself, I limited my intake of food to very little, exercised every time I put something in my mouth, and took laxatives to get rid of anything else. I always compared myself to others, weighed myself several times a day, constantly looked in the mirror to make sure my thighs didn't touch, and still wasn't happy. This went on for several years and it was exhausting! So...I started eating, but not necessarily in a healthy way.

Next I went through the season of drinking Dr. Peppers every morning (which was like my coffee), and because I worked across the street from the best Donut place ever I frequently stopped on my way to work for delicious hot Donuts and Chocolate Milk. I was also across the street from a wonderful Fried Chicken restaurant, and being the Southern girl that I am looked forward to delicious Fried Chicken Strips, Fried Okra, and Sweet Tea for lunch. As you can tell, I didn't have a stellar healthy diet. Of course, I still was extremely concerned about getting fat so I just upped my exercise.

During this time of not eating so healthy, a breakfast staple in my house was Pop Tarts and French Toast Sticks for my kids, and I thought Fish Sticks, Chicken Nuggets and boxed Macaroni and Cheese worked pretty well for dinner. I did throw in some vegetables and fruit to help balance things out. Looking back now I realize my food choices were not very healthy but definitely convenient. Thank goodness we were very active and spent a lot of time riding bikes, roller blading, and going to the park to help offset the unhealthy eating.

The wake-up call came when my dad gave us a scare and had to have stents put in his arteries for his heart to work properly. I have heart disease on both sides of my family so the Doctor kindly but bluntly told my brother, sister, and myself that if we weren't eating healthy and exercising we very likely would develop heart disease, also. All I could think of was what my insides probably looked like with all the junk I had been putting in my body, not to mention my families. So began my journey for a healthy, happy family. We began eating a lot more clean whole fruits and vegetables, and much less of the convenient junk food. I joined a produce co-op which pushed me to try new things and make new recipes, and looked forward each week to what was included in the box. I still had so much to learn about good nutrition, but I did know that changes had to be made.

Fast forward to today and I am still learning so much! That's not to say that I don't have the occasional fried foods, because I do love them, but I now have them in moderation. There is always some new vegetable to try and new recipes to make that crowd out the old way of eating. Being healthy does not have to be hard and it can actually be fun. You just have to start. You set goals of where you want to be and achieve and then take tiny steps to get there. Good health and happiness is your vehicle to your destination. It is a journey because with each season of our lives things change. We change. What works for one person doesn't necessarily work for someone else. This is why it is so important to find a plan that works specifically for you, in this season of your life, to have a sustainable healthy lifestyle. I can promise from my experience that you will feel so much better and actually be happier when you begin to take care of you! You are the only one who can help yourself. This is your journey, and I would be honored to support and encourage you in finding your way to a Healthy, Happy You!
